Judging by their debut single, The Indigo Road are going to be around for quite a while. "Simple" is just that; a simple acoustic ballad that tugs at the heartstrings of anyone who has ever been in love. Guest vocalist Heidi Jo Hines, daughter of former Wings guitarist Denny Laine, brings a wistful longing to the acoustic strumming of Mark Herbert (the sole member of The Indigo Road). Just as you begin to believe that this is another version of The Weepies, the second of the double A side starts.
"Goodbye to You" has Hines going her best Alanis Morissette (circa 1996) as she angrily sings about her former lover and why she can’t wait to "say goodbye to you." Hines laces the track with a steady drum beat and a not-quite-so-angry guitar that doesn’t come close to what Alanis accomplished, but it gets the job done.
This double A side shows how diverse and talented Herbert is at songwriting. He writes all the songs and occasionally provides background vocals, but he prefers to have guests do the main vocals. It may not be the norm, but for The Indigo Road, it not only works well, but it is sure to give this artist a boost right into the spotlight.
