Part of a Balanced Musical Diet
by: matt cibula

"Ow! Mommy, my teeth hurt!"

"I told you not to go listening to that Holiday With Maggie EP! Those two crazy Swedes make music that's so sickeningly sweet that I knew it'd give you dental caries!"

"But Mommy, it was so yummy! First it tasted like Velvet Crush in their Matthew Sweet phase ("A Girl Like You"). Then it changed somehow, and was kind of all Britpoppy ("C'mon C'mon"), and then it tasted like Weezer ("Antisocial"). I mean, come on, mom, you have to love a song with a chorus that goes 'It's a damn good reason to feel / Antisocial.' Dontcha, Mom?"

"Well, yeah, that song is kinda dope. What came next?"

"Well, 'That's What They Do' was pretty much like the Rembrandts, but 'Flap-Jack Girl' tasted like Weezer again, so that was a little disappointing. And then it finished off with 'New Barn Close,' which was a weird attempt at wah-wah funk in the middle of an innocuous 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da' ripoff. It was like the Pet Shop Beatles, Mommy, and it didn't taste all that good."

"There, there, dear. Just go brush and floss really well, and we'll go see the dentist tomorrow. You should be fine, but just in case I'm going to have you listen to some nice El Gran Silencio and Flaming Lips and Blackalicious tonight. It's good for you--and delicious, too!"

"Does that mean I can never have pop again?"

"No, dear, I'm not saying that. Just eat a balanced diet from now on, okay?"

"You're the greatest, mom."
