Being as I am not a fan of show tunes,
I was pleasantly surprised to find one that was listenable in
the soundtrack to Camp.
Amidst
all the films original songs lurks such cool covers of the Rolling
Stones' "Wild Horses" and Todd Rundgren's obscure gem
"The Want Of A Nail." These do mix well with some Camp
originals - especially the gospel laden "How Shall I See
You Through My Tears" and a tasteful ballad, "I Sing
For You", adds a nice mix to the otherwise mostly fervor
driven tone of the other cuts.
The
appeal of the Camp songs is possibly due to its authors,
Michael Gore and Lynn Ahrens (Gore penned the music for 1980's
Fame including "Out Here On My Own" and the title smash
while Ahrens was responsible for lots of those catchy Schoolhouse
Rock ditties from the 70's).
But
mind you, Camp would not be a true camp experience with
out some pitfalls and there are several in the lame "Turkey
Lurkey Time." But, this miss-step is more than made up for
by the inclusion of legendary alt-gods The Replacements and their
urban drenched classic "Skyway."
